Writing By The Distillation Method

The Distillation Method is what I use to write both music and conduct my research. The above song was constructed by using this method. Distillation begins with one thought and in the respect to music it begins with one note. From the note I will generally expand on my thoughts concerning the note and the emotions that it may stir within me. As I hear the thoughts that are produced by the sound I begin to think about the instruments I want to add.

With distillation one note and thought leads to another. Just like in the distillation process after a while there are consistent drops of distilled after that. The drops starting flowing and dropping faster and faster as the process begins. I use music as a therapy for calming my mind. I have tremendous amounts of research, and instructional activities that I engage in and it is important that I continue to be able to receive fresh and innovative ideas.

Since I began recording I have moved to doing most of my music from an impromptu process. It keeps my mind creative and active as each song is a freshly distilled work. It will enable me to explore both the technical side and the creative aspect of writing and performing music. I generally perform in and around the college that I teach because of my very hectic teaching and lecturing schedule. The above session was one of the creative distillation processes that I use to keep my hands flexible.
