Why Classical?

Classical music is a phenomenon that is quite extraordinary. Inspire of being one of the most complicated styles of music it is also highly mathematical in nature. Its complexity gives it one of its most outstanding characteristics within the music genres. Firstly, it is one of only types of music that is written with multiple key signatures and even multiple time signatures. Some of the most complex pieces can have simultaneous key signatures as rhythms.

Classical music uses notes that most other types of music does not begin to incorporate within their compositions. Some classical pieces will incorporate 32nd notes, 64th notes. Classical music has been known to utilize 128th notes and even 256th notes that have been found in Vivaldi as well as the music of Jan Ladislav Dussek and some ascribe certain music of Beethoven (3rd Piano Concerto) to have what appears to be 256th notes. Only Jazz music makes use of the various modalities of music construction like classical.

What is more amazing is that classical and certain types of jazz music stimulate the brain and the mind in a more intellectual manner than most other styles of music. The mathematical construct engages the mind to think and also causes the brain to empower the mind to do so. According to mindbodyvortex.com there are 5 major benefits to classical music on the brain and the mind. They are as follows:

1. They ease pain and depression

2. Improves the quality of sleep

3. Enhances mental awareness

4. Reduces stress

5. Makes one feel at ease and promotes creativity

It is said that as humans we respond physiologically to sound through our brains. Certain sounds or tones set to certain frequencies can cause our speed up or slow down. How sound is processed can either inhibit or empower our listening responses and therefore impact what we understand or remember. Certain pitches or tones and rhythms can also cause the blood pressure to speed up as well as the heart rate. Classical music has a calming and soothing impact on the body and the mind. Again only certain types of jazz and classical music has been found to cause these impacts to a great degree. What most people call elevator music is also an aspect of classical music.

I began years ago playin classical instruments such as the violin and the upright bass. I later switched to the baritone horn and played in the orchestra with the violin, bass and the baritone horn. I only began playing piano seriously about 6-7 years ago. Although I am still learning I have found the benefits of classical, classical and jazzical music to be astounding. As a writer and professor of Philosophy, Theology and Divinity I see the benefits when I study and also when doing research.

Music is a very powerful force that can enhance the mind or slow its development. It is both mathematical and scientific in nature. Its tones and melodies can invoke emotion or cogitation. It can set moods or disrupt moods it is a force that is both primeval and endless in its development and construction.
