What Is The Human Soul
There is much debate concerning the nature of the soul and as many concepts of the soul as there are books that seek to describe the soul and its nature. As of yet most are in conflict with one another which adds to the confusion of trying to establish any doctrinal consensus of what scripture says about the soul. It is here that we will find a plausible answer if we dare to examine the text closely.
There are only 4 terms in scripture that are rendered "soul" in reference to man as a living being or the inner essence of man. These terms are:
1. Nephesh (Nepes) - Breathing creature, mind, person, will or appetite (desires etc)
2. Nediybah - Nobility, reputation, noble deed of the free will
3. Neshammah - Breath, blowing, breeze snorting or anger
4. Psuche - soul, mind etc
There are instructors of theology, lecturers and host of spiritual leaders that believe that mankind is actually a species of spirit beings that have a soul. And therefore the soul is not seen as the individual person but an aspect of one's being. In my studies and research for Essencology and Nephesiology I have found some very interesting aspects that are revealed in scripture. I have come to understand why dualists believe in the assertion of man being a spirit that is encased within a physical body but my consensus remains that of a trichotomist who believes in the trichotomic nature of man. This trichotomic nature is as follows:
1. Body
2. Soul
3. Spirit
Genesis 2:7 reveals the foundational premise of the meaning and the nature of the soul. The study of human nature (Phusiology) at best when taken from the scripture gives the believer a biblical concept of what the soul is. There are three components that were the cause of the existence of the human soul. These three elements were the dust of the ground (Gen. 2:7), The Spoken Word of God called Logos(John 1:3) and the breath of life (Gen. 2:7). We are told that the result of the creative actions of God in combining these elements man became a living soul (Chay Nephesh). It is here that Essencology and Nepheshiology base their premise on the trichotomic nature of man. What is known from this portion of scripture is the following:
1. Man is a living entity that is much more than just a physiological entity.
2. Man himself is a living soul as a person and therefore the inner essence which exerts itself through the body is the primary natural life and natural being of the the man's person.
3. The soul is like air or the wind in nature and also must breathe to survive. The breathing process also reveals that the soul is actively living through the physiology.
4. The soul has the powers of thought, inclination or desire as well as emotional responses
These four components of information reveal the foundation for a Nepheshiology Proper (a direct study of the soul itself). Because of the immensity of the subject at hand it would be virtually impossible to list all that the soul is in nature, essence, definition and substantae. The text, "Nepheshiology, The Study of the Soul" is being written even as I am completing this blog. It will be completed by the summer of 2017 or hopefully before. This will be the very first text on the subject of Nepheshiology and will introduce the concepts of this amazing topic.
The human soul (Nephesh) exists within a dimension and plane that is like the current of wind or a breath of air. It is immaterial (not lacking in substance but merely not made of physical matter or of the atom as we know). The soul is existing living energy that operates like the wind that is exclusively intelligent and its own individuality. This living wind-like energy is intelligent, sentient and consciously aware of itself, others and its surroundings. This living nephesh can also extend itself throughout the body to operate its own volition through the extremities and physiology of the body.
The soul is the living personage of the individual person that lives and operates through the physiology of the material somatic structure known as the body. What this means is the soul is extra-dimensional and very powerful indeed.
